Are there particular rules I will be expected to obey?

Of course, but we hope they are fair and common-sense, enough to make sure that our Boarding Houses are safe, healthy and that students can work well and get enough sleep. Please see our Guide for Parents and Students.

Is my room furnished? What should I bring?

Your room is furnished and we provide bed-linen, but you need to provide the rest. For example, you need to supply a duvet and duvet cover, and desk-light. We do not supply toiletries, paper, files etc.

A bicycle can be handy, but you can get one in Cambridge. There is a detailed list of other items that you may bring into boarding in the Guide for Parents and Students.

What can't I bring?

You cannot bring a TV, a pet, a car, heating or cooking equipment, or your own furniture (unless agreed in advance). There is a detailed list in the Guide for Parents and Students.

When can I arrive and can I stay in the holidays?

Generally, you arrive on the afternoon of the day before teaching starts. If the Senior House Manager agrees, you can arrive earlier, but you must ask in advance. You can stay during holiday periods (including half terms, but excluding Christmas), but you must book this with the Senior House Manager, and there is a charge for this.

Do I have to do my own laundry?

Yes, and your own ironing. This is part of learning to live independently in preparation for university. The Houses have laundry facilities.

Do I need to bring a telephone?

College Houses have telephone points in the rooms, and a phone will be supplied. Calls to CCSS numbers (for example other student rooms) are free, although you have to pay for calling other numbers. Many students use Skype for telephone calls, as free broadband Internet is provided in every room.

Am I covered if something gets stolen or destroyed in my room?

Not unless it is our fault. We advise you to take out insurance (and to lock your room when you leave it). Contact the Bursar for advice on insurers.

Will I have access to the Internet in my Boarding House?

Yes, free broadband Internet access is provided in each bedroom.

Is smoking permitted in the College Boarding Houses?

Absolutely not, not even in the privacy of your own room.

What is the policy on alcohol in the College?

No alcohol is allowed in the Boarding Houses, even if you are over 18. We also will not allow under 18s to buy alcohol at College events.

Where do I eat?

You generally eat breakfast in your own Boarding House. Lunch and evening meals are eaten either in your Boarding House or in the CCSS student dining hall.
