Environmental Studies

Environmental Studies is a rapidly expanding field which has developed a high media profile. This course addresses how humans interact with animals and plants as well as the human impact on the physical environment.

The course comprises aspects of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Politics, Economics, Geology and Sociology. It is an interesting A-level because of its diversity and relevance to the world around us and our future.

The subject lends itself to a wide variety of approaches, so be prepared for class discussion, group work, individual and group presentations, videos, problem-solving and decision-making exercises as well as note-taking and research.

Since the study of the environment is so topical, you are encouraged to keep a close eye on current events.

The examination forms 25% of total A-level marks

Course structure

The A-level examination is in two parts: the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) which consists of two written units  and is worth 50% of the total award, and a second examination (A2) which consists of two written units and is also worth 50% of the total marks.

Students are expected to carry out appropriate investigative activities. Integral to each unit is the development and use of practical skills relevant to the study of the environment. These skills will be assessed in all four units.

Background needed

Students should have knowledge and skills associated with GCSE Science and an interest in our relationship with the world. Commitment and hard work are essential for success. You do need to be happy with graphs and statistical methods.

Suitable combinations

Environmental Studies fits in with a variety of Arts and Science based subjects. Universities, higher educational institutions and employers all find it an acceptable A-level subject.

• The handling of numerical data.
• How to work with fellow students on projects.
• How to develop your communication skills and present your ideas.
• How to define the important issues and identify possible solutions.

AS Environmental Studies course content

The course consists of two units:

Unit 1: (ENVS1) The Living Environment

The four main topics covered in this unit are:

• Conditions for Life on Earth.
• Wildlife Conservation.

• Life Processes in the Biosphere.
• Land Resources.

The examination forms 40% of total AS marks.

Unit 2: (ENVS2) The Physical Environment

Three main topics are covered:

• The Atmosphere.
• The Hydrosphere.
• The Lithosphere.

The examination forms 60% of total AS marks.

A2 Environmental Studies course content

The course consists of two units:

Unit 3: (ENVS3) Energy Resources and Environmental Pollution

Two main topics relate to Energy and Pollution:

• The Energy topic examines issues with energy supply and demand.
• The Pollution topic examines pollutant properties to explain why certain materials cause damage to the environment.

The examination forms 25% of total A-level marks.

Unit 4: (ENVS4) Biological Resources and Sustainability

The main topics in this unit are:

• Human Populations.
• Food Production Systems.
• Aquatic Food.
• Production Systems.
• Forestry and Sustainability.

The examination forms 25% of total A-level marks.

After A-level

Environmental Studies opens the door to a wide range of careers, many of which require the skills that this subject teaches. These include agriculture, forestry, conservation, planning, environmental health, local government and tourism, to name but a few.
