Introduction
Biology is a challenging and fascinating subject, and it has many applications to everyday life. Our understanding of biology is an understanding of life itself, and has great implications for the future of humankind.
Course structure
We follow the IGCSE Biology syllabus. We cover the aspects of human, plant and environmental biology. The course enables students to better understand the world in which they live and take an informed interest in science and scientific and technological developments. Students learn about the basic principles of biology through a mix of theoretical and practical studies. Students also develop an understanding of the scientific skills essential for further study at A Level. As they progress, students learn how science is studied and practised, and become aware that the results of scientific research can have both negative and positive effects on individuals, communities and the environment.
Good English and mathematical skills are important to success in this subject. Having some background knowledge in this subject will be an advantage but it is not essential as with start each new topic with from a basic level.
Assessment details
Multiple Choice Paper: 45 minutes (30%)
Structures Question Paper: 75 minutes (50%)
Practical Test: 75 minutes (20%)
There is no coursework for this syllabus.
After the GCSE course
IGCSE Biology has a natural lead on to Advanced Level Biology and Environmental Studies. It equips students with experimental, analytical and communication skills which are useful to their studies in other disciplines. It also provides an insight into the effects of humans on the environment.
