IGCSE English Literature

Course overview

This one-year course enables you to: engage with and develop the ability to read, understand and respond to a range of literary texts; develop an appreciation of the ways in which authors achieve their literary effects; develop the writing skills needed express and analyse your response to literary texts on paper; understand and appreciate the contexts in which literary texts are written; find enjoyment in reading literature and understand its influence on individuals and societies.


Paper One: Poetry and Modern Prose

The assessment of this paper is through a two-hour examination, set and marked by the examination board.

This paper is worth 60% of the qualification.

The texts for examination in 2018 are:

  • The Edexcel English Literature Poetry Anthology.
  • ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck.

Paper Two: Modern Drama and Literary Heritage Texts

The assessment of this paper is through one coursework assignment, internally set and assessed and externally moderated by Edexcel.

This paper is worth 40% of the qualification.

Students study two plays:

  • Macbeth by William Shakespeare
  • An Inspector Calls by J B Priestley

The assessment of this paper is through two coursework assignments set and marked internally, and externally moderated by the examination board.
