CCSS students join the debate at the European Youth Parliament
On Wednesday 13 March, six of our Year 12 students from CCSS attended a European Youth Parliament regional session at Girton College, Cambridge. They were one of five schools from around East Anglia taking part, and unlike Model U.N conferences where they each worked as individuals, this time each school worked as a team. Our CCSS students worked on preparing themselves to defend a resolution on the question of what will happen to Gibraltar after Brexit. This is especially pertinent since 96% of Gibraltarians voted to remain in the EU, in contrast to the 52% overall vote to leave.
The day of debates began with one on the issue of whether pineapple should be considered a pizza topping, and whether we can actually call it a Hawaiian pizza when it’s origins actually lie in Canada. This warm up debate helped to loosen up some anxious and nervous delegates, as well as introducing the students to the debating procedures, parliamentary motions and the formal language required.
After this, the more serious debates started, with CCSS as the main defending team of the proposed resolution on the issue of Gibraltar. Lots of other topics were also discussed ranging from whether cultural artifacts should be returned to their country of origin by museums and public bodies, to the question of what steps the EU should take to protect Jewish citizens from harassment and to combat the dissemination of anti-semitic ideas, as well as topics on environment, security and defence. Fun and creative sessions led by the organisers kept the students focused and fresh throughout the day.
The students got to eat lunch in the beautiful halls of Girton College, and a short discovery walk through the college made many of them very excited for the university life that is ahead of them.
