Contemporary Art seminars at CCSS
Contemporary visual art has never been more popular, with record numbers visiting museums and galleries such as the Tate Modern in London. Overall, the creative industries in the United Kingdom account for a massive 14% of the economy, while our art colleges have long been a magnet both for national and international students, many of whom go on to create the visual landscape of the future.
It was against this background that lower sixth students studying Fine Art at CCSS took part in a series of seminars led by Shihan Liu (CCSS alumnus 2014-16). Shihan is currently studying Contemporary Art at the University of Westminster in London and for his year two Professional Practice module he returned to CCSS to talk with our students about contemporary art and education – particularly relevant since many are interested in applying to art college next year.
Shihan started each session with individual sketchbook presentations, where each student spoke at length about their personal art project, followed by questions and discussion from the rest of the group. Later, Shihan described life on his course including the weekly lectures and seminars, practical and theoretical projects, visits to the London galleries, as well as the importance of Marcel Duchamp on the conceptual movement that continues to dominate the visual arts today. He also described the latest thinking behind contemporary art practice in the public domain – summarised as CCC (Creation, Communication, Conception) – in which the private creative act enters the public arena resulting in socially engaged collaborative projects.
The discussion that resulted was lively and informative. For most of the students, this was the first time they had been asked to think about the role of the visual arts in this way and for some, the experience was transformative.
