Jaguar Land Rover visit
Our CCSS Business students had the opportunity to visit the Jaguar Land Rover factory in Castle Bromwich. They were given a tour around the factory, and their guide walked them through all the different parts of the assembly line.
One of the highlights was learning about the robots used in the factory. Issy and Jordan describe it here:
‘The robots had human-like features, able to move and bend, then use an arm to pick up a tool and work on the car, then put the tool back. Jordan asked whether the guide thought that in the future there will be no need for employees because the robots will be able to do it all. The guide answered that ‘we still need employees because people can fine tune production by hand which is needed for fitting some parts like the dashboard, whereas a robot can’t’.’
The students also got to see all of the parts arriving in different areas of the factory, and learnt about how the parts only arrive just as they are needed in order to save money. They also learnt about Jaguar Land Rover’s collaboration with Ferrari, and how they share parts for some of the high-powered engine, which also helps increase efficiency.
Another highlight was seeing Jaguar Land Rover’s own railway track that allows them to transport cars to Southampton and Portsmouth to be shipped to customers all over the world. The students saw cars that were being shipped to China, the USA, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands. They also learnt about the movement towards electric vehicles, and the design and testing process required to produce a new car. This takes three years, and by 2025, Jaguar Land Rover are aiming to only offer electric vehicles.
Overall, this was a hugely informative day and a fantastic opportunity for the students to see how a factory operates, and what improvements are constantly being made to maintain the highest possible level of efficiency.
