Summer in Cambridge
Cambridge is commonly featured on ‘best places to live’ lists and similar rundowns – the region’s very own Bourn and Chesterton were recently voted two of the best places to live in the East of the UK. Thanks to the itinerary of excellent events and festivals planned this summer, you can see why Cambridge ranks so highly. Despite the school summer holidays not officially starting until July, festivities – both on and off campus – are in full swing. We recently celebrated the end of term with a summer barbecue party, whilst throughout Cambridge there are a number of other events to pen into your diary. Read on to discover our top picks for what’s on this summer in Cambridge.
A celebration of music and summer in the most beautiful surroundings at Cambridge University Botanic Garden. This year’s Sounds Green programme starts on Wednesday 4th July 2018 and continues every Wednesday from 6.15pm throughout the rest of July. The events themselves are free, normal garden admission does still apply.
The Big Weekend
As the name suggests, The Big Weekend should not be missed. Featuring a range of activities and performances, the three-day long event takes place at Parker’s Piece in the very centre of the city. Festivities start on Friday 13th July 2018 with a firework display. The Big Weekend sees music, great food, markets and family friendly activities bring the city to life. Sunday, the third and final day of The Big Weekend, is dedicated to the Cambridge Mela, the ultimate celebration of Asian culture. There will also be a number of community performances, whilst both Friday and Saturday night will see the ever popular silent disco return.
Cambridge Comedy Festival
Based on the Edinburgh Fringe format, Cambridge Comedy Festival is now a major event in its own right, showcasing established and new talent on the comedy scene. The festival takes places from Wednesday 18th to Saturday 21st July 2018 across a range of Cambridge based venues. The festival’s organisers Cambridge Junction had this to say about this year’s event:
“The 12th edition of the annual Cambridge Comedy Festival returns to the city with 34 shows from some of the world’s finest comedy performers. After two years of alfresco comedy on Jesus Green the Festival returns to its original home at Cambridge Junction where the venue will be transformed into a comedy hub with four performance venues plus the ‘Moonshine Brewery’ beer garden and delicious food from our Street Food vendors. The Jesterlarf Comedy Club will be hosting shows each night with big name headliners, whilst the other venues host Edinburgh Preview shows and have a star studded program of comedy award winners and the hottest emerging talent. There are also some great kids shows for our young chucklers.”
Cambridge Folk Festival
A must-visit for music lovers across Cambridge and the wider region, this year’s Cambridge Folk Festival promises a brilliant line up. Running from Thursday 2nd until Sunday 5th August 2018 at Cherry Hinton Hall.
